As I mentioned before, my son gets two birthday cakes this year and as his birthday is close to halloween this cake has a bit of a halloween colour theme going on.
I went a little darker with this cake choosing an amazing chocolate cake recipe from Julián Ángel (check out his cakes, they are superb). Layerd in between the sponges was a simple swiss buttercream, and the cake was covered in a dark chocolate swiss buttercream.
Rather than go black for this as might have been expected for a halloween cake I went with a dark grey instead, I think it makes for an interesting contrast to the orange, coppers and browns that the cake was decorated with.
I wanted this cake to look a little rickerty so i found these great bright orange coloured flowers in the garden, typical of the Autumn season here in Sweden, I created some dark chocolate shards with candied ginger in them for that spicy warm feeling and then to top it off, some lovely toasted marshmallows. Again a little use of metallics to give it that splash of bling.
This cake was all about getting that autumn halloween feeling. A little bit awkward, a little bit dark with a few splashes of pumpkin orange. It went down a right ‘trick or treat’. Bring on christmas.
